It seems that fewer teenagers do part-time jobs to earn a bit of extra money these days. They are too busy studying and revising for exams. All the same, I decided to find some part-time work this year to have a little more to spend, and my parents encouraged me. They had both had paper rounds when they were at school!
I didn’t go for that, though much too early in the morning! What I wanted was something I could do after school hours, so… something not too early but not too late. Then I saw the ad for a kitchen assistant in the organic restaurant in our village. They wanted someone from 5 to 7 pm Monday to Friday evenings, which suited me fine.
In fact, by law, 15-year-olds are not allowed to work after 7 pm, which seems perfectly right to me. You shouldn’t let your schoolwork suffer. If you worked late at night, you’d be too tired to get up in the morning and you need time to do your homework, too. In my two hours in the restaurant, I’m busy preparing the fresh organic vegetables that will be cooked that evening for dinner, and laying the tables before we open up.
I’ve learnt a lot from this job. Apart from getting some great ideas for cooking, I’ve enjoyed working with the staff there. You get to know when it’s time for a laugh and a joke, and when it’s time to get down to hard work! Apart from that, you learn how to work with a variety of personalities and not take things too seriously. The chef can get mad and start shouting, for example, when he’s very busy, but you shouldn’t take too much notice. He’s a great guy really!
All in all, this job combines all the things I like: working with fresh food, turning it into something creative and tasty, and being part of a friendly team. And it has helped me decide what I’d like to do later on in life I might even open a restaurant of my own someday!

Forest fires are becoming a huge problem all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of square metres of trees are burnt every year. [16] ________ As a result, many people are left without a home. The worrying thing is that fires like these are becoming more and more common and there are several reasons for this.
One big reason for so many forest fires around the world is climate change. Climate change is the way our planet’s weather is changing. [17] ________ This means more fires starting and those fires being more difficult to put out. In addition, while some fires start naturally, others happen because of human activity. [18] ________ And as people spend more and more time outdoors enjoying nature, forest fires are more likely to happen. Firefighters have to be specially trained to stop these fires, using equipment such as planes that drop water on the fire from above.
Big fires that burn for a long time are not good for the environment or for people. [19] ________ Many people may not know this, but they can be good for nature and help it to renew itself. Small forest fires help clear away old or dead trees to make room for new ones. The burnt wood turns into ash, which helps the new forest to grow. [20] ________ The problem starts when there are too many and they grow too large.
