Days, Weeks, Months and Years

Days:

A day is how we measure time from when the sun rises until it sets and then rises again. It’s like a big clock that takes a full 24 hours to complete one cycle. We divide a day into 24 hours, and each hour has 60 minutes, and each minute has 60 seconds.

Days Have Names

Each day is special! There are seven different days:
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Saturday
Sunday

Weeks:

It’s a cycle that repeats every 7 days. Seven days together make a week. A week can be any period of seven days.

Months:

A month is like a section of time that helps us keep track of the year. It’s related to how the moon changes its shape in the sky. A month is around 29 to 31 days long. We give names to each month, like

January: The first month of the year.
February: The second month of the year.
March: The third month of the year.
April: The fourth month of the year.
May: The fifth month of the year.
June: The sixth month of the year.
July: The seventh month of the year.
August: The eighth month of the year.
September: The ninth month of the year.
October: The tenth month of the year.
November: The eleventh month of the year.
December: The twelfth month of the year.

You can think of a month as a way to mark the passage of time and different seasons.

Years

A year is a bigger chunk of time, like the time it takes for the Earth to go around the sun once. We use years to know how old we are and to remember important events. Most years have 365 days, but every four years we add an extra day (making it 366 days) to make sure our calendars match up with the Earth’s journey around the sun. This special year is called a leap year (when February has 29 days, instead of 28 days).
